Roman ruins and a different feel
November 01, 2008 17:49

Tarragona is a nice small town that has Roman ruins dating back to the first few centuries AD. I walked around and looked at the remains of the amphitheater, the forum, and several other ancient buildings. There was very little remaining of the forum but the amphitheater was incredible and quite intact. I paid about five euros to walk around inside of it. It was worth it because I got great photos.

The city is definitely touristy because of the Roman ruins, but I had a nice day here. I haven’t seen Roman ruins before, so I can’t say whether this compares to other ruins. The average traveler wouldn’t want to spend more than a day here.

We took a cheap train to Tarragona from Barcelona that lasted about an hour. It was a picturesque ride that took us right by Sitges, the famous beach town. The vibe was very different from Barcelona, so it was a nice day trip that allowed us to see a different side of Spain.

Matt and I took a train to Tarragona yesterday, a small city an hour south of Barcelona. Tarragona was a Roman city around 100 A.D. and still has some ruins. The amphitheatre is particularly cool. It’s pretty well preserved and they let you walk around parts of it.

We met a really awesome guy on the train, too. He was maybe about 40 years old and on his way to teach an English class in Tarragona. He took us for beers before his class. We were supposed to call him back in Barcelona last night but were completely exhausted from walking around and passed out as soon as we got in. We’ll have to call him to hang out again sometime soon.

Chris (Matt’s dad) and Logan are here in Spain now, although they have left to go to Madrid for a few days. We’re going to San Sebastian for the weekend which I’m looking forward to.

I think we have an apartment to live in Amsterdam for November. It’s a little outside of town but they will lend us bikes so it shouldn’t be too bad (apparently 15-20 minutes by bike to the center). Plus, it’s on a houseboat, which is very exciting. I’m going to be extremely high… :)
